Drone That Could Fly for Months? Alteon Pursues Energy-Neutral Flight Technology

Indian Startup Alteon Explores Albatross-Inspired Drone for Months-Long Maritime Surveillance

New Delhi: Indian startup Alteon is developing a radically different fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to achieve extremely long-endurance flight by harnessing wind energy.

The aircraft, which has an approximately three-metre wingspan, uses a technique known as dynamic soaring. The concept is inspired by albatrosses, which exploit differences in wind speed to gain energy and remain airborne for extended periods with minimal effort.

Alteon’s initial focus is on persistent maritime surveillance. The startup has reportedly conducted autonomous flight tests over the Bay of Bengal, completing seven cycles at speeds exceeding 100 km/h while flying approximately one metre above the water.

The company’s longer-term objective is to develop an aircraft capable of energy-neutral flight. Under the concept, the drone could switch off its motor during portions of the flight, while its propellers could potentially function as turbines to generate electricity and recharge onboard batteries.

If successfully developed, the technology could enable UAVs to remain over maritime areas for extremely long periods, potentially reducing the need for conventional refuelling and frequent recovery.

Alteon has reportedly raised $2.5 million to further develop the technology.

However, claims of one-year or months-long endurance remain development targets rather than demonstrated operational capabilities. The biggest challenge will be proving that sustained energy-neutral flight can be achieved under changing real-world weather, wind and maritime conditions.

If Alteon succeeds, its technology could establish a new category of low-energy, persistent UAVs capable of providing continuous surveillance over vast ocean areas.
