BJMC Anti-Ragging Committee Investigates After Missing Student Case, College Denies Ragging Charges".

PUNE:Tension prevailed at BJ Government Medical College (BJMC), Pune after a medical student went missing, with allegations of ragging surfacing against seniors. The college administration has rejected the ragging charges and an anti-ragging committee investigation is underway.

What Happened:

According to reports, the incident came to light after a complaint was filed by a junior resident doctor and his parents with the state secretariat in Mantralaya, Mumbai. The complaint alleged mental harassment and ragging by three senior PG students from the Orthopaedics department. 

Following the complaint, BJMC formed a 15-member anti-ragging committee including representatives from the parents' association, MARD, doctors, and police to probe the matter. 

College's Stand:

Dr Eknath Pawar, Dean of BJMC and Sassoon General Hospital, stated that no complaint of ragging was received earlier. "We received the complaint on Monday from the state secretariat and the students. Immediately a meeting was called and an inquiry was initiated," he said. The college has denied allegations of physical abuse, including claims of hot water being poured on students, calling it an "exaggeration". 

Action Taken:

Based on previous similar cases in 2025, BJMC had suspended three second-year PG students for six months after an anti-ragging committee found them guilty of ragging four junior doctors. The suspended students were also expelled from the hostel and fined ₹1 lakh each.In the current case, the administration says strict action will be taken if any ragging is proven. The HOD of Orthopaedics was also transferred during the earlier probe. 

Students' Allegations:

The complainants have alleged that there was lack of basic anti-ragging measures like security guards near junior doctors' rooms, no CCTV, and no anti-ragging squads. They also claim the college did not follow NMC guidelines.Dean Pawar said a proposal for increased security has been sent to the state government and they are awaiting a response. 

Investigation is ongoing and the anti-ragging committee will submit its report soon.
