MUMBAI : MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks that he had "forgiven" the students who abused him and his mother during the recent NEET protests.The Thackeray cousins said the PM should also address abusive language used by political workers on social media.
WHAT THE THACKERAYS SAID:
Addressing the issue, Raj Thackeray said:
"I agree that the language was inappropriate..."But he added that the Prime Minister should go beyond forgiving students and also tell *BJP's trolls* to stop their online abuse.Both leaders argued that abusive language in public discourse, whether from protesters or from political supporters, needs to be condemned equally.
BACKGROUND: NEET PROTESTS:
The criticism comes amid ongoing protests over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in NEET 2026. During demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and other places, some protesters were heard using abusive slogans against PM Modi and his family.PM Modi earlier said he had forgiven the students involved, calling for restraint and dialogue.
POLITICAL REACTION:
The Thackeray cousins' remarks have added to the political debate around the NEET row, with Opposition leaders demanding accountability from the Education Ministry, while the BJP has defended the PM's "forgiving" stance as an example of statesmanship.
