Saharanpur Collectorate Mosque Demolished After Court Ruling
Authorities in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, demolished a mosque located inside the district Collectorate complex on Saturday, September 5, following a court ruling that upheld its status as an unauthorised structure on government land. A district court had dismissed the mosque committee’s appeal on September 2, upholding an earlier eviction order.
The administration said the structure occupied about 315 square metres (around 3,390 sq ft) of government land and was unauthorised. The demolition was carried out under heavy police and paramilitary security, with the site subsequently cleared.
The mosque’s history has become a point of dispute. Community representatives and political leaders have cited records dating back to 1911, while authorities have maintained that the structure was an unauthorised occupation of government property.
The demolition has triggered political controversy, with opposition leaders questioning the timing and manner of the action. The mosque committee has indicated that it may challenge the demolition before a higher court.
