Shashi Tharoor Slams Lathi-Charge During Non-Violent Protest, Cites Democratic Right to Dissent".
New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticized the use of force against protesters, questioning the justification for a lathi-charge during a non-violent demonstration. In a sharp remark amid the ongoing debate over police action at Jantar Mantar, Tharoor said:
“When a non-violent protest is taking place, what is the reason for a lathi-charge? Lathi charge is not an act of non-violence. It is an act of violence...”
Context:
The remark comes after Delhi Police used batons and tear gas to disperse thousands of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) supporters who had gathered at Jantar Mantar for the 'Chalo Sansad' march demanding accountability over NEET paper leaks and education reforms.
While Delhi Police denied "sporadic use of violence" and said the protest was being handled professionally, visuals circulating online appeared to show RAF personnel using lathis against demonstrators.
Tharoor on Democratic Protests:
Tharoor has consistently emphasized that protest is a constitutional right in a democracy. Earlier this year he noted that while protests in India over issues like Bangladesh unrest remained peaceful with “no violence, no lynching”, the state must still act if lines are crossed.
He also drew historical parallels, recalling how leaders of the freedom movement faced lathi-charges while remaining non-violent. Referring to Lala Lajpat Rai, Tharoor once said: "Imagine going defenseless and having those lathis rain down on you. Lala Lajpat Rai died from a lathi charge...hitting his head in a non-violent demonstration. That takes far more courage".
Political Reaction:
The Jantar Mantar action has drawn criticism from Opposition leaders. Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue in Rajya Sabha, saying "Thousands of children have gathered at Jantar Mantar. They have been lathi-charged. The government is trying to suppress them".
Tharoor’s statement adds to the Opposition’s demand for restraint and dialogue instead of force when dealing with peaceful protests.
