"Trump, Pezeshkian Sign US-Iran Peace Deal Framework To End War"

THE REPORT.

WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed an interim peace deal framework to end the 2026 Iran war, with both sides agreeing to halt hostilities and begin formal negotiations.

KEY TERMS OF THE FRAMEWORK:

The agreement, called the "Islamabad Memorandum", was signed on June 17, 2026 and includes:

Immediate ceasefire extension: 60 days to negotiate final terms, including in Lebanon

Strait of Hormuz to reopen: Trump authorized "the toll-free opening" and end of US naval blockade. Iran will also resume unrestricted oil exports

Sanctions relief: US will waive selected sanctions allowing Iran to sell oil freely

Nuclear program talks: Iran to dilute stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Final negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program deferred for later

Lebanon clause: Permanent termination of military operations on all fronts including Lebanon 

Trump posted on Truth Social: "The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!

MEDIATION & TIMELINE:

The deal was mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. Formal signing meetings were set for Switzerland, with Vice President JD Vance attending. The war began on February 28  with joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. A 2-week ceasefire was agreed April 8, later extended indefinitely on April 21. 

REACTIONS:

Iran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said "Iran is the winner of the war with the US", but also said changes to the text were possible

Markets: Oil prices fell 4-5% after the announcement, with Brent dropping to $80.89

Critics: Analysts say the deal appears to favour Iran, with Trump winning mainly the reopening of Hormuz. Trump himself sought tougher terms and sent the proposal back for review 

WHAT REMAINS:

The framework sets a 60-day timeline for negotiations on a broader settlement. Key unresolved issues: Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and missile programe which Iran says is not part of talks. Qatar called it "cautiously optimistic" for regional security. 2003
