New Delhi, July 17, 2026:Climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike entered its 20th day on Friday at Jantar Mantar. Despite growing health concerns, Wangchuk has vowed to continue till July 20 for the proposed 'Chalo Sansad' march to Parliament.
What Doctors Are Saying:
Doctors attending to Wangchuk have raised serious alarms:
Critical Stage: Doctors warned on Thursday that his prolonged fast has reached a critical stage and continuing could lead to serious complications, including possible organ damage. The next phase could be "alarming" with multi-organ risk.
Weight Loss: Wangchuk has lost over 9 kg since the fast began on June 28. His current weight is 56.9 kg.
Vitals: As of the latest bulletin:
Blood sugar: 80 mg/dL
Blood pressure: 105/61 mmHg lying, 101/65 mmHg sitting
Pulse: 72 bpm

He is well-hydrated and mentally alert for now

CJP statement: Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke said Wangchuk has become so frail that "his bones are visible" and he narrowly escaped falling twice.
Wangchuk's Response:
Despite medical warnings, Wangchuk has refused to end the fast, saying doing so without a government response would send the wrong message.
He told supporters:
"I am weak from the outside but very strong inside... I will stay alive till July 20 at any cost. If you don't come and July 20 is not successful, I will come back as a ghost".He also said his ECG and heart are "still fine" and he can continue for many more days.
Court Intervention:
The Delhi High Court has taken note and directed authorities to monitor Wangchuk’s health daily and provide medical assistance if his condition worsens. The court said "life of any citizen is precious".
