Owaisi Calls Allahabad HC Hijab Ruling an ‘Attack on Islam’
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly criticised the Allahabad High Court’s dismissal of a minor student’s petition seeking permission to wear a hijab along with her prescribed school uniform in Prayagraj.
Owaisi described the judgment as an “attack on Islam” and questioned the court’s role in determining what constitutes an essential religious practice. He argued that the ruling conflicts with constitutional protections for religious freedom and freedom of expression under Articles 25 and 19.
The Allahabad High Court had rejected the student’s plea, holding that she had not provided sufficient material to establish that wearing a headscarf was an essential religious practice. The court also upheld the authority of a school to enforce a uniform, non-discriminatory dress code intended to maintain discipline and institutional identity.
Owaisi’s remarks have added to the wider debate over religious freedom, school dress codes and the constitutional limits of religious expression in educational institutions.
