THE REPORT.

New Delhi:CJP spokesperson Saurav Das has reacted sharply to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s decision to extend Delhi Police’s preventive detention powers under the National Security Act (NSA) till October 18, 2026.

The NSA Extension:

On July 15, the Delhi government’s Home Department issued a notification under Section 3(3) of the NSA, 1980. It empowers the Delhi Police Commissioner to order preventive detention from July 19 to October 18, 2026.

Under NSA, individuals can be detained for 3 to 12 months without being presented before a court, to prevent acts "prejudicial to the defence of India". 

Delhi Police called it a "routine quarterly renewal" issued every three months, and said the order predates the CJP protests. The force urged people not to believe "misleading information" linking it to the CJP agitation. 

CJP's Reaction:

CJP leaders have linked the move to the ongoing student protests. Amid the protests, CJP has alleged abuse of police powers against young protesters. 

Earlier this week, spokesperson Saurav Das had accused Delhi Police of detaining "hundreds of peaceful protesters" and denying legal access. Police denied the claim, stating "no person is currently under detention". 

CJP has also previously accused police of "zero preventive action" regarding attacks on protesters at Jantar Mantar and demanded that the safety of peaceful demonstrators is the responsibility of Delhi Police. 

With the new NSA powers in place ahead of CJP’s nationwide protest call for July 24, CJP has said the extension is being used to create an environment of fear and suppress dissent over exam paper leaks and the demand for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. 

Context:

The CJP protests began on June 20 over alleged irregularities in competitive exams. Delhi Police have imposed prohibitory orders banning large gatherings in New Delhi district ahead of the planned march.
