Human Rights Groups Hail Lebanon’s ‘Monumental Step’ To Abolish Death Penalty

Beirut :Lebanon’s parliament has approved a draft law to abolish the death penalty, a move described by Justice Minister Adel Nassar as “historic.”If formally enacted, Lebanon would become the first country in the Middle East to formally abolish capital punishment.
Key Details:
Lebanon has not carried out an execution since 2004, despite retaining the death penalty in its laws.The new draft law would completely remove capital punishment from the legal code.The decision has been welcomed by Human Rights Watch, which called it a “monumental step for human rights.”
Other Legal Reforms Under Discussion:
The vote comes as lawmakers are also debating a general amnesty law, an issue that has been discussed in Lebanon for years.
Human rights groups say abolishing the death penalty aligns Lebanon with international human rights standards and reflects a broader shift toward legal reform in the region.
