IAEA Raises Alarm Over Lack of Access to Iran’s Nuclear Sites

VIENNA, September 7, 2026: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that it remains unable to verify the status of Iran’s declared nuclear material and facilities, raising serious concerns over nuclear proliferation.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told the agency’s Board of Governors on Monday that the watchdog had neither received the necessary information from Tehran nor obtained access to the affected facilities for field verification during the latest reporting period. 

Grossi said it had been more than a year since the IAEA lost continuity of knowledge regarding Iran’s previously declared stockpile of uranium enriched to as much as 60%.

He described the lack of information and inspection access as a “matter of serious proliferation concern” and called for urgent action. Grossi urged Iran to fully cooperate with the agency and provide the information and access required to verify its nuclear activities.

The IAEA has previously reported that it cannot establish the current status of significant quantities of Iran’s enriched uranium because inspectors have been unable to conduct the necessary on-site verification. 

The latest warning comes amid heightened international concern over Iran’s nuclear programme and growing pressure on Tehran to restore full cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.
