BOAT ACCIDENT OFF PHU QUOC COAST:
A group of tourists was caught in rough seas while swimming off Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam* on May 20, 2026.
According to local reports, 1 tourist died and 2 others were injured* in the incident.
DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT:
The incident occurred at a beach area in Duong Dong Ward amid bad weather, strong winds and high waves. One male tourist, believed to be around 20 years old, died despite rescue efforts.Two other tourists were taken to Phu Quoc Medical Centre for treatment and monitoring. Rescue workers used amphibious motorbikes to bring the victims ashore, while hotel medical staff provided first aid at the scene.
WARNINGS ISSUED EARLIER:
Local officials said warnings had repeatedly been issued to tourism businesses and visitors about sea safety and avoiding swimming during bad weather, but accidents continued to occur.
INDIAN GOVT RESPONSE:
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam is reportedly in touch with local authorities for details and assistance to the affected tourists. Further details on the nationality of the victims are awaited.
