Penguin India Responds to Sonia Gandhi Memoir Row; Modi, RSS and China References Reportedly at Centre of Dispute
Penguin Random House India has clarified that it is not the publisher of Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, in India, pushing back against reports that it withdrew from the project after the Congress leader rejected proposed editorial changes. The publisher said that any suggestion that the decision was linked to Gandhi refusing such changes “does not accurately reflect the circumstances.”
The clarification follows reports that passages in the manuscript had become a point of disagreement. According to sources cited in reports, the contentious material relates to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, the RSS and alleged Chinese encroachment along India’s borders. These details have not been independently confirmed by Penguin India.
The memoir is scheduled for international release on November 10, 2026. With Penguin India out of the picture, reports say other publishers, including HarperCollins, are considering the Indian publishing rights.
