RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s NYC Visit Triggers Debate Over India, Diaspora and US Politics

New York: What was planned as a major Indian diaspora gathering in New York has turned into a politically charged event, with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s scheduled address at Madison Square Garden drawing criticism and sparking a wider debate over Indian and US politics.

Bhagwat is scheduled to address the “Universal Oneness Celebrations” at Madison Square Garden on August 29. The event, organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue, is expected to attract thousands of attendees. 

The controversy intensified after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly said he did not support the RSS event. Mamdani criticised what he described as the organisation’s exclusionary ideology, while also acknowledging that the city may not have the authority to cancel a privately organised programme. 

The opposition has triggered protests and criticism from several interfaith and civil-rights groups, while supporters of the event argue that it is intended to promote dialogue, cultural engagement and the message of universal oneness. 

The dispute has now extended beyond New York, becoming a point of discussion within the Indian-American diaspora and in Indian political circles. With Bhagwat addressing a large audience at one of New York’s most prominent venues, the event is being closely watched as a potential flashpoint over Hindu nationalism, diaspora politics, pluralism and India-US relations.
