Passenger’s Gun Goes Off at Varanasi Airport, Two Screeners Injured

A major security incident was reported at Varanasi airport on Sunday, August 16, 2026, after a passenger’s firearm went off during a weapons check, injuring two security screeners.

According to reports, the passenger was travelling with his wife on Air India Express flight IX-1810 to Mumbai. The firearm discharged while it was being inspected during the security screening process. Two screeners associated with AAICLAS (Airports Authority of India Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Limited) sustained injuries. 

Investigation Underway

The circumstances surrounding the firing are being investigated by the authorities. Officials are also expected to examine how the firearm was handled during screening and whether established airport security procedures were followed.
