Mumbai: – Shreyas Iyer has been appointed the new captain of the Indian T20 team, with Suryakumar Yadav left out of the squad.
Former India captain Rohit Sharma backed the move, saying Iyer’s recent track record as captain in the IPL has prepared the Mumbai batter for the new role.
Looking at Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant captaincy in the IPL in recent years, it feels that the Mumbai batter is fully ready to succeed in the new role for the Indian team,” Rohit said.
Iyer has led multiple IPL franchises, including taking Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 and Punjab Kings to the playoffs in 2026. His calm leadership and middle-order batting have been widely praised.
The three-time World Cup winning side made the captaincy change with key tournaments in mind, including this year’s Asia Cup, the 2028 Olympics, and the next T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar Yadav, who led India in T20Is through 2024-25, has been dropped from the squad.
