Sugar Prices Soar, Stocks Fall: Kharge Takes Aim at Modi Government
Kharge Slams Centre Over Rising Sugar Prices, Low Stocks
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has criticised the Centre over the sharp rise in sugar prices and declining domestic stocks, questioning the government’s claim of building a “self-reliant India.”
Kharge questioned how India, a major sugar producer and exporter, reached a situation where exports were halted and 1 million tonnes of raw sugar were allowed to be imported duty-free. He also claimed that sugar prices had risen by nearly 40% in three months.
He further questioned the government’s ethanol policy, asking why sugarcane was being diverted towards ethanol production while the country was facing tighter sugar supplies.
