Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Detained After Nine-Hour Sit-In at Akashvani Bhavan
New Delhi, October 6: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday evening after a nearly nine-hour sit-in by INDIA bloc leaders at Akashvani Bhavan in New Delhi.
The protest began after INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raising concerns over the electoral-roll revision process, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Police stopped the march near the NITI Aayog office.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Opposition leaders subsequently entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises and continued their protest. Police later moved in to clear the premises and detained the protesters.
The detention came amid heightened tensions between the Opposition and the Election Commission over demands concerning electoral rolls and the functioning of the poll panel. The INDIA bloc has called for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and has sought changes to the ongoing SIR exercise.
According to reports, several other Opposition MPs and leaders were also detained during the protest.
