5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet Days After Devastating Floods, Panic Grips Region
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet on Thursday, just days after the region and neighbouring Nepal were battered by catastrophic flooding and landslides. According to reports citing the US Geological Survey (USGS) and GFZ, the tremor occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometres.
The earthquake has heightened anxiety in an area still recovering from the deadly Himalayan disaster of August 26. The earlier catastrophe was initially thought to have been triggered by an earthquake, but subsequent USGS analysis determined that the seismic signal was generated by a massive glacial collapse and debris flow, which then caused devastating flooding downstream.
The latest 5.1-magnitude event is considered a separate seismic event from the earlier landslide-generated tremor. Rescue and recovery operations in Tibet remain challenging because of unstable terrain, continuing rainfall and the risk of further landslides.
