Mystery Deepens as US Military Plane Lands in Moscow Amid Russia-Ukraine War
A US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on Tuesday, August 25, after flying directly from Riga, Latvia, according to flight-tracking data reported by Reuters.
The unusual flight has sparked speculation because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and strained relations between Washington and Moscow. However, the purpose of the aircraft’s visit, its passengers and its cargo have not been officially disclosed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin had no information about the aircraft’s arrival. The flight was reportedly the first known direct flight by a US-registered aircraft from Europe to Russia since January, when US envoys travelled to Moscow for talks on Ukraine.
While the unexpected landing has raised questions about possible diplomatic activity, there is currently no confirmed evidence that senior US officials were aboard or that the flight was linked to peace negotiations.
