China Joins India’s Search for 22 Missing Crew of Sunken MV Ocean Winner

New Delhi: Search and rescue operations have intensified in the Bay of Bengal for 22 crew members who remain missing after the Panama-flagged cargo vessel MV Ocean Winner sank off the Odisha coast last week. Two of the 24 crew members were rescued after the vessel sent a distress alert.
The vessel was carrying 24 crew members, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi national. It had departed Paradip Port carrying iron ore when it sank in the deep waters of the Bay of Bengal.
The Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy have deployed ships and aircraft for the search. An emergency beacon linked to the vessel and an empty lifeboat have been located, but no additional survivors have so far been found.
Chinese authorities are also assisting the Indian-led search operation, with Chinese vessels joining efforts to locate the missing crew. Difficult sea conditions and the considerable depth of the area are complicating the rescue mission.
The cause of the sinking remains under investigation. Reports have pointed to the possibility of cargo liquefaction involving iron ore fines, but authorities have not yet established a definitive cause.
