Feeling Breathless After a Few Steps? These Warning Signs Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Breathlessness is a common complaint, especially when climbing stairs, walking quickly or suddenly increasing physical activity. In many cases, it may simply be linked to poor fitness, excess weight or a sudden change in activity levels. However, persistent or unexplained breathlessness can sometimes point to an underlying health problem, including anaemia.

People who are physically inactive may become breathless more quickly because their cardiovascular fitness is lower. Similarly, weight gain can increase the body's demand for oxygen and make everyday activities more strenuous.

Anaemia is another possible cause. When haemoglobin levels are low, the blood carries less oxygen to the body's tissues. This can result in tiredness, weakness, dizziness, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity.

However, breathlessness should not always be attributed to being “unfit” or overweight. Warning signs such as breathlessness at rest, chest pain or pressure, fainting, bluish lips, a racing or irregular heartbeat, sudden worsening of symptoms, or difficulty breathing during routine activities require medical attention.

If breathlessness is new, persistent or getting worse, it is important to consult a healthcare professional rather than assuming it is simply due to poor fitness or weight gain.
