Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has emerged as a prominent figure in the state’s intensified campaign against unhygienic food businesses.
Since taking charge as Maharashtra’s food safety chief in May, Mundhe and his teams have conducted more than 3,000 raids across Mumbai and other areas. Authorities have also suspended permits at several outlets of major food chains.
The inspections have reportedly uncovered a range of alleged violations, including poor hygiene, expired food products and pest infestations.
“I don’t think I’m a celebrity. I’m just a food safety commissioner,” Mundhe told Reuters, underscoring his focus on enforcement rather than publicity.
The crackdown has attracted considerable public attention, with many consumers welcoming stricter action against businesses that fail to maintain food safety and hygiene standards.
