From a Drought-Hit Village to the IAS: Ansar Shaikh Clears UPSC in First Attempt

Ansar Shaikh emerged as one of India’s youngest IAS officers after clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination at the age of 21, turning his family’s financial struggles into a story of determination and achievement.

Hailing from Shelgaon village in Maharashtra’s Jalna district, Ansar grew up in a financially disadvantaged family. His father worked as an auto-rickshaw driver, while his mother was a farm labourer. His family made enormous sacrifices to support his education, with his younger brother reportedly leaving school to work at a local garage and contribute to the household income.

Motivated by his family’s sacrifices, Ansar maintained an intense study schedule, reportedly studying 12–13 hours a day for three consecutive years. His determination was reflected in his approach to the examination: he considered failure too costly because his family could not easily afford another attempt.

In 2015, Ansar cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his first attempt, securing All India Rank 361.

He chose Marathi as his medium for the examination and interview. His performance in the interview was particularly notable, with the account citing a score of 199 out of 275.
