After Aleema, Imran Khan’s Two More Sisters Detained Ahead of PTI’s September 27 March

Two more sisters of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan — Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi — were detained in Lahore for 30 days on Monday, September 21, ahead of the party’s planned September 27 protest and march towards Islamabad. 

The detentions came a day after their sister Aleema Khan was detained under Pakistan’s Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law. Uzma and Noreen were subsequently shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, according to local reports. 

The Lahore Deputy Commissioner issued the detention orders under Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance following a police recommendation. Authorities cited concerns related to public safety and maintenance of public order. The orders reportedly referred to allegations concerning the sisters' involvement in the May 9, 2023 protests and their alleged mobilisation of PTI supporters through public meetings and social media. 

The PTI has announced a nationwide protest and march towards Islamabad on September 27, demanding Imran Khan’s release and calling for what it describes as the supremacy of the Constitution. Party leaders have said the planned movement will be peaceful.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned the PTI against proceeding with the Islamabad march, while the party has condemned the detention of Imran Khan’s family members. 

The latest detentions bring three of Imran Khan’s sisters — Aleema, Uzma and Noreen — into custody in the days leading up to the planned PTI mobilisation.
