MIT Scientists Develop Injectable Gel to Help Repair Damaged Nerves
Scientists are exploring a promising new approach to nerve repair using injectable hydrogels that could help damaged nerves regenerate with less invasive treatment.
In animal studies, nerve-specific hydrogel treatments have been shown to support axon regeneration and improve functional recovery after peripheral nerve injuries. Researchers found that the gel can create a supportive environment around injured nerves, potentially helping nerve fibres reconnect while limiting processes that can interfere with healing.
The findings raise hopes for future treatments for people suffering from nerve injuries and loss of sensation. However, the research remains at the preclinical stage, and further studies are needed to determine whether similar results can be achieved safely and effectively in humans.
If successful, injectable nerve-repair technologies could eventually offer a less invasive alternative or complement to conventional surgical approaches for certain peripheral nerve injuries.
