“Enough Is Enough”: Guterres Urges World Leaders to Stop Middle East Fighting

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged world leaders to use the United Nations General Assembly as an opportunity to de-escalate the growing conflicts across the Middle East, warning that civilians continue to bear the devastating consequences of the fighting.

Speaking amid escalating tensions in the region, Guterres said the international community must move beyond temporary pauses in fighting and work toward a genuine reduction in violence.

“Enough is enough,” Guterres said, stressing the urgent need to stop the cycle of conflict.

He described the so-called ceasefires in the region as having amounted to “little more than lesser fires,” arguing that they had failed to provide lasting relief to civilians caught in the violence.

The UN chief called for an immediate end to the fighting and urged countries to ensure that humanitarian assistance can reach people in need without obstruction.

Guterres also called for navigational rights and freedoms to be fully restored in accordance with international law, highlighting concerns over disruptions to regional maritime movement.

With multiple conflicts and crises unfolding simultaneously, the UN secretary-general appealed to world leaders gathered at the General Assembly to take concrete steps toward de-escalation, humanitarian access and respect for international law.

His remarks came as the Middle East continues to face severe humanitarian and security challenges, with civilians, infrastructure and regional stability under mounting pressure.
