Iran Is No Longer a Bully’: Trump Vows to Block Tehran’s Nuclear Ambitions

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 22, used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to defend Washington’s military campaign against Iran and reiterate that Tehran will not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. 

Trump said Iran had previously been described as the “bully of the Middle East,” but claimed that the country had been significantly weakened following US military action. He argued that the removal of what he described as the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran would create conditions for greater stability in the region. 

Trump’s Nuclear Warning to Iran

Trump has repeatedly said that preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon remains a central US objective. In his UN remarks, he defended the decision to confront Tehran, saying Washington had given Iran opportunities to reach an agreement before military action was taken. 

The US president has previously stated that American military operations targeted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure as well as its missile and military capabilities. 

Iran Signals Possible Diplomatic Opening

Trump’s tough remarks came as signs of a possible diplomatic channel between Washington and Tehran emerged at the UN. Iranian officials have reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US eases its military pressure and blockade of Iranian ports, with negotiations potentially resuming afterward. 

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also indicated that Washington remains open to talks if they can produce a practical outcome, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. 

At the same time, Iranian hardliners have continued to reject direct negotiations with Trump, highlighting the deep political divisions surrounding any potential US-Iran agreement.
