2029 Will Be Last Election If BJP Wins Again': Ex-MP Imtiaz Jaleel's Claim Sparks Political Row.
Poll Rhetoric Democracy At Risk': Ex-Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel Says 2029 May Be India’s Last Election.
What Imtiaz Jaleel Said.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad): Former Lok Sabha MP and Maharashtra AIMIM chief Imtiaz Jaleel* has stirred a political controversy with his remark that “2029 will be the last election”and “if BJP wins again, there will be no elections in India henceforth.”
Context of the Statement:.
When & Where: Jaleel made the remarks while addressing party workers and during media interactions in Maharashtra ahead of upcoming polls. He has repeated similar warnings at rallies, framing it as a concern for democracy.
His Argument: Jaleel alleged that the BJP is working to “provoke people and polarize voters”to benefit electorally. He cautioned opposition leaders, including Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, “not to walk into BJP’s political trap”. The “last election” claim reflects AIMIM’s narrative that a third straight BJP term would endanger democratic processes.
BJP’s Response: BJP leaders have dismissed the charge. Union Minister Raosaheb Danve earlier remarked on Aurangabad’s electoral math, saying “we need to make sure Jaleel contests” for BJP to win, highlighting how multi-cornered fights involving AIMIM impact outcomes. BJP terms Jaleel’s claim as “fear-mongering.”
No Evidence: There is no constitutional provision or official statement from BJP or Election Commission suggesting elections will be abolished after 2029.
Electoral Process: India’s elections are mandated by the Constitution. Any change would require a constitutional amendment with 2/3 majority in Parliament ratification by states.
Political Rhetoric: Such “last election” claims have been made by various opposition leaders before 2014, 2019, and 2024 polls as campaign rhetoric.
