7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Mexico Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued For Pacific".
Mexico City :A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico on Friday, triggering a tsunami warning for parts of the Pacific coast.
QUAKE DETAILS:
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at a depth of around 9-11 miles. The epicenter was located about 48 km southwest of Aquiles Serdán in the coastal state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala.
The quake was initially recorded as 7.4 before being revised down to 7.3.
TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED:
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said hazardous tsunami waves were possible along coasts located within 300 km / 186 miles of the epicenter.
Waves between 0.3 meter and 1 meter above tide level could hit some coasts in Mexico and Guatemala. Mexico's Navy said water levels were not expected to rise more than half a meter but advised people to stay away from beaches.
IMPACT IN NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES:
The tremors were strongly felt in Guatemala and El Salvador.
In Guatemala City, buildings shook and residents ran onto the streets in panic. Staff evacuated government buildings.
A 29-year-old accountant in Guatemala said: "I got really scared and it reminded me of the recent earthquake in Venezuela. So I ran out and went down the stairs because I live on the eighth floor. The shaking wouldn't stop".
A series of aftershocks between magnitude 5 and 6 were also felt in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.
NO CASUALTIES REPORTED SO FAR:
Authorities have reported no immediate damage or casualties in Mexico, El Salvador or Guatemala. Mexico's Secretary of the Navy, Raymundo Morales, said "There is no problem, no serious maritime impact".
Officials continue to monitor the situation for aftershocks and any changes in sea levels.
