Date Announced for Funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei; 20 Million People Expected to Gather.

Three-day state funeral planned for late June or early July across Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad; burial site still unconfirmed.

Tehran, June 13, 2026::-Iranian authorities have announced a revised schedule for the state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 in US-Israeli strikes on his Tehran residence. The three-day ceremony is now expected between June 26 and July 5, after the first 10 days of Muharram.

 20 Million Mourners Anticipated.

Tehran Deputy Mayor Mohammad Amin Tavakoli-Zadeh said officials are preparing for one of the largest public gatherings in history, with up to 20 million people expected to attend ceremonies in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. The main event in Tehran alone is set to last at least 24 hours.

Multiple Delays Due to War and Muharram.

Khamenei’s funeral was originally planned for early March but was repeatedly postponed due to active military conflict. Authorities later delayed it again to allow Shia Muslims to complete annual mourning rites for Imam Hussein during the first 10 days of Muharram.

Burial Site Still Uncertain.

While Fars News Agency earlier reported Khamenei would be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in his hometown of Mashhad, the Astan Quds Razavi foundation said in April that no burial location had been confirmed. The body is expected to be taken in procession through Qom and Mashhad before burial.

If turnout reaches 20 million, the funeral would surpass the 1989 ceremony for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, which drew around 10 million
