Black Smoke Over Riyadh Airport After Air Attack Hits Jet-Fuel Storage

Riyadh, September 19, 2026: A large plume of black smoke was seen rising from the area of Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport on Saturday after an overnight aerial threat alert in the capital. The incident comes amid a sharp escalation in attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement against Saudi targets.

According to The Wall Street Journal, an air attack struck a jet-fuel storage facility at the airport, marking the first direct assault on Riyadh in months. The exact type of weapon used—whether a drone or missile—was not immediately clear. No group had formally claimed responsibility at the time of reporting. 

Reuters reported that explosions or loud booms were heard overnight before Saudi authorities issued warnings about a potential aerial threat. Thick black smoke and flames were subsequently visible near the airport’s fuel-storage area. 

The incident also disrupted air traffic. Flight-tracking service FlightRadar24 reported major problems at Riyadh’s airport, with cancellations and delays reported following the attack. 

The attack comes as the Houthis have intensified military activity against Saudi Arabia amid the renewed conflict in Yemen. Saudi authorities have also carried out airstrikes against Houthi-controlled areas.

The escalation has raised concerns over Saudi energy infrastructure and regional shipping routes, particularly the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key passage for global maritime trade. The United Nations has condemned attacks targeting Saudi civilian and energy infrastructure and called for efforts to prevent further escalation.
