Iran’s Pezeshkian Tells UN: Tehran Seeks No Nuclear Weapons, Will Defend Peaceful Nuclear Rights
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the United Nations General Assembly that Iran does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, while insisting that Tehran will not abandon what he described as the country’s inherent right to peaceful nuclear technology.
Addressing the UNGA amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, Pezeshkian defended Iran’s nuclear programme as peaceful and said Tehran remained committed to its rights under international law.
His remarks come against the backdrop of continued disputes between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions and regional security.
Pezeshkian’s statement sought to draw a distinction between Iran’s pursuit of civilian nuclear capabilities and the development of nuclear weapons. Tehran has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes, while the United States and its allies have raised concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities and enrichment capabilities.
The Iranian president’s address came as diplomatic efforts and tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme remained a major issue at the UN General Assembly.
