LATEST ESCALATION:

Tensions in the Middle East have sharply escalated after Iran carried out retaliatory strikes following new US military attacks.

According to US Central Command, American forces struck 140 Iranian military targets on Saturday, including surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, and drone storage facilities. The strikes came after Iran allegedly attacked a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iran fired drones and missiles at Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Jordan overnight. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it hit "18 important US targets" in Kuwait and Bahrain and launched *12 ballistic missiles at a US command centre in Jordan.

Iran also claimed it had closed the Strait of Hormuz after firing warning shots at a vessel on an unauthorized route.

 GLOBAL CONCERNS:

The exchange has raised fresh fears of a wider regional conflict.

Energy & Trade: The Strait of Hormuz handles about a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas. Iran's blockade and ship attacks have caused energy prices to surge.

Gulf States Under Fire: Jordan, Qatar, UAE and Bahrain said they engaged incoming drones and missiles. Kuwait closed its airspace as a precaution.

US Response: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted, "Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay". President Trump warned Iran would "pay the price" for stalled negotiations.

 DIPLOMACY UNDER PRESSURE;

Despite the fighting, officials say negotiations are still on track. Mediators from *Qatar and Pakistan are pushing both sides to keep dialogue alive.

However, Iran warned any further US attacks would be met with "even more severe responses"and threatened to suspend talks.

Analysts caution that further retaliation could deepen instability across the Gulf and derail efforts to end the war.
