From Aurangabad to Bratislava: Himroo Tie Gifted by PM Modi Puts Indian Handloom on World Stage

In a proud moment for Indian handloom, a handcrafted Himroo tie and pocket square from Aurangabad were presented as a gift to the *President of Slovakia by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent diplomatic visit.

A Centuries-Old Craft on a Global Stage.

Himroo, a 300-year-old weaving tradition unique to Aurangabad, blends cotton and silk with intricate designs rooted in Persian influences. Once patronized by the Nizams and Mughal nobility, the craft is preserved today by a handful of artisan families.

“Alhumdulillah, feeling proud and excited to share,” said the artisan group behind the gift. “Seeing Himroo showcased on such a prestigious international platform is both humbling and inspiring.

The Gift.

The tie and matching pocket square, woven with traditional Himroo motifs, were selected as part of India’s cultural diplomacy. The gesture highlighted India’s commitment to promoting its *GI-tagged handloom heritage abroad.

Recognition for Aurangabad’s Artisans.

For the weaving community, the moment is validation of generations of skill. “Moments like these reaffirm our commitment to preserving and promoting this magnificent legacy, while taking the art of Himroo to the world stage,” the artisans said.

Himroo received the Geographical Indication tag in 2008, but artisans have long struggled with declining demand. High-profile showcases are seen as crucial for revival.

‘Make in India’ Meets Cultural Soft Power.

The gift aligns with PM Modi’s practice of presenting indigenous crafts to world leaders from Kashmiri Pashmina to Kanchipuram silk. Officials say such gestures boost global awareness and open new markets for Indian weavers.

Community Pride.

Local residents and handloom advocates called it “a proud moment for Aurangabad, a proud moment for Himroo, and a proud moment for Indian handloom craftsmanship.”

Handloom groups in Aurangabad hope the international spotlight will translate into sustained patronage, training for younger weavers, and stronger exports.

When a centuries-old craft from Aurangabad finds place in diplomatic exchanges, it’s not just a gift it’s recognition that India’s handloom heritage belongs on the world stage.
