WHAT HAPPENED:

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement that controls northern Yemen accused Saudi Arabia on Monday of launching airstrikes against Sanaa International Airport to prevent an Iranian plane from landing.

The Yemen government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia and operates from Aden, said its armed forces targeted the runway at Sanaa Airport to stop the Iranian aircraft. The plane later landed safely at Hodeidah airport, a Houthi-controlled facility. Following the strike, Yemen's internationally recognised government ordered the closure of all airports nationwide to air traffic until further notice.

HOUTHIS RESPOND: "BLATANT AGGRESSION".

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree called the attacks "blatant aggression" and said they had ended a period of de-escalation.

He said Saudi Arabia would bear the consequences and that the attack "would not go unanswered".

The Houthis vowed retaliation, testing a truce in the long-running conflict between the kingdom and the Iran-aligned group.

Background:

Yemen has been in civil war and proxy conflict for more than a decade since the Houthis seized Sanaa and forced the government to relocate to the south.

A 2022 truce between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthis has largely held, despite regional escalation linked to the Israel-Gaza war.

The Saudi government’s communication office did not immediately respond to the accusations.

WIDER ESCALATION:

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region. Houthi leaders have previously warned they would resume attacks on shipping and Israeli targets in solidarity with Gaza, and have vowed "blood revenge" for Israeli strikes on Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has not issued an official response yet.
