Can’t Be Explained Rationally or Morally’: Sonia Gandhi Attacks Modi Govt’s ‘Stony Silence’ on Gaza, Cites UN Genocide Findings.

New Delhi:-

Sharp Criticism of Centre’s Gaza Stand.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday mounted a “blistering attack” on the Modi government over its response to the Israel-Gaza conflict, calling its “stony silence” and “inaction”on what she described as Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza “morally reprehensible”and “inexplicable from a national interest perspective”.

In an article published in The Indian Express, Gandhi wrote: “The Modi government’s continued silence simply cannot be explained rationally or morally.”

 Key Arguments.

Strategic fallout: Gandhi claimed India has “alienated itself from its historical allies in Palestine, Iran, and the larger Middle East”and “distanced itself from global public opinion”, while “letting Pakistan swoop in to claim the space of a mediator”

PM’s Israel visit: She termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel* shortly before the “US-Israel joint attack on Iran”a “bewildering strategic decision”

Moral obligation: _“The spirit of Indian nationhood demands that it speaks up for Palestinians whose children have been so brutally targeted,” she said, adding that national interest requires India to respond to global criticism of Israel’s “genocidal actions” in Gaza and “brutal displacement”in the West Bank.

 UN Reports Cited.

Gandhi referred to the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which concluded in September 2025 that “Israeli authorities were committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza” .

She added that a June 2026 reportby the same commission now headed by retired Justice S Muralidhar“reiterated that Israeli actions are intended to destroy the very existence of the Palestinians in Gaza by targeting their children”. The 94-page report noted “at least 20,000 children have been killed, and another 44,000 have been wounded”.

 Political Reactions.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge backed Gandhi’s “evocative piece”, saying it’s a “stark reminder of how our current foreign policy has alienated” India. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared the article, stressing the need for a shift in foreign policy.

This is Gandhi’s fourth article on West Asia in one year. She earlier called Modi’s “shameful silence” on Gaza the “height of moral cowardice”.

Sonia Gandhi argues India’s refusal to condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza abandons both “moral traditions”and “strategic interests”, urging the government to “speak clearly, boldly and forthrightly” for Palestinians.
