Iran Threatens to Destroy Gulf Ports in Response to US Blockade of Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has warned that it will destroy ports of Gulf nations if the US proceeds with its plan to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. The threat comes after US President Donald Trump announced a naval blockade of the strait, citing Iran's refusal to agree to a nuclear deal .
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway through which around 20% of the world's oil passes. Iran had previously threatened to close the strait in response to US and Israeli actions, leading to a significant increase in global oil prices.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has stated that any military vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a ceasefire violation and will face a "strong and forceful response". The IRGC has also warned that it has full control of the strait and will not hesitate to take action to protect its interests .
The US has announced that it will begin a blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. The US Navy has deployed minesweepers to the area to clear mines laid by Iran .
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The UN has called for restraint and dialogue to resolve the crisis .
