Ras Tanura, June 28, 2026

What Happened.

A helicopter belonging to Saudi oil giant Aramco crashed Sunday morning around 6 AM in Ras Tanura on Saudi Arabia's eastern Gulf coast, killing all 14 people on board. The Saudi state news agency confirmed the incident, citing the Ministry of Energy.

All victims were Saudi nationals, according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA). An official source said: “The accident caused the death of all 14 passengers, all Saudi citizens.”.

Investigation Ongoing.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. The state news agency said “Investigations are under way, with the participation of ‌relevant authorities, to determine the causes of the helicopter crash.”

Strategic Location.

Ras Tanura is home to one of the world’s largest oil export terminals and refineries, with a capacity of 550,000 barrels per day. Aramco had resumed crude oil loadings Friday at the terminal after they were halted for nearly four months.

The crash comes amid escalating regional tensions. The facility was previously hit by drone strikes in March 2026 that temporarily halted operations, and again struck by an “unknown projectile” days later. The wider Gulf is seeing heightened military activity, with Iran launching missile strikes against U.S. bases and the U.S. and Israel striking Iran.

 Market Reaction.

Despite the tragedy, Saudi Aramco shares advanced 1.8% Sunday, snapping an eight-session losing streak. The broader Saudi benchmark index fell 0.2% as regional tensions rattled investors.

This is a developing story. 14 Saudi nationals died when an Aramco helicopter crashed in Ras Tanura early Sunday. Authorities have not linked the crash to foul play, but it occurs as the key oil hub faces security threats amid the U.S.-Iran-Israel conflict. Investigations are ongoing.
