Massive crowds flood streets after El Tri’s first knockout win in 40 years; authorities urge fans to “celebrate with responsibility”.

What happened

At least three people died of asphyxiation late Tuesday/early Wednesday (June 30 – July 1, 2026) during massive celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 in the World Cup 2026 Round of 32. 

Victims confirmed by Mexico City’s Health Secretariat:

19-year-old woman 44-year-old man 48-year-old woman who died after being taken to hospital .

The deaths occurred near the Angel of Independence landmark on Hamburgo and Lancaster Streets, where thousands had gathered.

-Significance: Mexico’s first World Cup knockout win since 1986  ending a 40-year drought and an 8-match losing streak in knockout games.

-Delay: Kickoff pushed back an hour due to thunderstorms 

Mexico, a 2026 World Cup co-host, advanced to the Round of 16 and will face the winner of England vs DR Congo on Sunday, July 5. 

Why it turned deadly.

Chaos also reported at fan fests: In Monterrey’s Parque Fundidora, police used *tear gas and pepper spray* on gatecrashers trying to climb fences to access a giant-screen viewing area. Several fans collapsed. 21d6

Official response.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada posted condolences on X and urged fans to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy”. An investigation has been launched. 

Health officials confirmed advanced resuscitation efforts failed to revive the first two victims. 

Despite the tragedy, videos of “breathtaking” celebrations went viral, with fireworks and chants filling Paseo de la Reforma. The win was historic: Mexico is the first host nation since Italy 1990 to win its first four World Cup matches, and has kept four straight clean sheets.
