Karnataka's Awais Ahmed Builds NASA-Backed Space Startup Pixxel, Secures ₹900 Crore in Funding.
From village encyclopedias to space orbit BITS Pilani alumnus leads India's mostfunded hyperspectral imaging company
THE JOURNEY: FROM ALDUR VILLAGE TO NASA CONTRACTS
Awais Ahmed, a 28-year-old from Aldur village in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, grew up without internet till 8th grade. His father brought home encyclopedias, and that’s how he learned about planets, galaxies, and space science.
He later studied Mathematics at BITS Pilani, joined Team Anant a student satellite project with ISRO, and led Hyperloop India in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition.
HOW PIXXEL WAS BORN:
In 2018, during the IBM Watson AI Challenge, Awais and his batchmate Kshitij Khandelwal tried to build an AI model for crop health. But they hit a wall quality satellite data didn’t exist.
So in February 2019, they launched Pixxel. They started with just ₹10,000 a month, funded by money borrowed from Awais's father. Their goal: build a "health monitor for the planet"
₹900 CRORE FUNDING + GLOBAL BACKERS.
Pixxel has raised around $95 million nearly ₹900 crore in total funding. Investors include *Google, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Radical Ventures.
This makes Pixxel one of the highest funded space-tech startups in India and the highest funded hyperspectral imaging company globally.
NASA DEAL AND FIREFLY SATELLITES:
Pixxel became the first Indian space startup to secure a NASA contract.
Under NASA’s $476 million Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition Program, Pixxel will provide hyperspectral Earth observation data to NASA and its partners till November 2028
In 2025, Pixxel deployed all six Firefly satellites into orbit. These are the world's highest-resolution hyperspectral satellites capturing data across 250+ spectral bands at 5-metre resolution. This helps detect:
Early crop stress before visible damage.
Methane leaks.
Illegal mining and climate changes .
Pixxel also signed a 5-year deal with the US National Reconnaissance Office.
RECOGNITION.
Named in TIME's 100 Best Inventions of 2023.
World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer 2024.
Awais featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 and MIT Innovators Under 35.
Pixxel now operates from Bengaluru and Los Angeles and plans to launch a full constellation of 18 commercial hyperspectral satellites.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR INDIA:
With only 260 space startups and $730 million total funding in India, Pixxel's growth shows the momentum in India's deep-tech space sector. Karnataka itself aims to capture 50% of India's $44 billion space economy by 2033.
Awais calls it a "monumental achievement" that will help "truly build a health monitor for the planet".
