Khatami Backs Iran-US MoU, Warns of Serious Consequences if Opportunity Is Lost
Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has voiced strong support for the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States, warning that losing the opportunity created by the agreement could push Iran into “serious and unusual problems.”
Khatami described the MoU as an unprecedented document, arguing that no agreement signed by a US president since World War II had offered as many advantages to the other side while imposing such significant commitments on Washington.
He also praised Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for signing the agreement “courageously.” Khatami noted that the deal had received backing from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and the country’s supreme leadership.
The comments come amid continuing debate inside Iran over the future of the agreement. The MoU was designed as a framework for ending the conflict and addressing outstanding disputes between Tehran and Washington through further negotiations.
Khatami’s remarks underline the importance he places on preserving the diplomatic opening with Washington, despite political divisions within Iran over the deal.
