Slovakia Backs India’s Bid for Permanent UN Security Council Seat, Says PM Fico.
During PM Modi’s historic Bratislava visit, Slovakia reaffirms support for UNSC reforms and India’s NSG membership; Ties elevated to Comprehensive Partnership.
Bratislava, June 17, 2026:- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed strong support for India becoming a permanent member of a reformed United Nations Security Council, stating that his government is “strongly convinced” countries like India must be part of an expanded Council. The endorsement came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Slovakia on June 15-16, 2026.
Fico’s Endorsement: ‘India Must Be Included’.
Speaking in Bratislava during PM Modi’s first-ever visit to Slovakia since its independence in 1993, Fico said:
“The Slovak Republic is strongly convinced that countries like India should become permanent members of the [UN Security] Council.”
He added that India “must be included in the United Nations’ Security Council as a permanent member.” 64dd
Joint Statement on UNSC Reform..
A joint statement issued after talks between Modi and Fico underlined the need for “comprehensive reforms of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and the UNSC, to make them more representative, inclusive and reflective of contemporary geopolitical realities”.
Both leaders stressed the “urgent need to expand the Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories”. The statement noted:
“In this context, India appreciated Slovakia’s continued support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed and expanded United Nations Security Council.” .
MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George said, “I’m very happy to note that the Slovakian leadership reaffirmed its commitment to support India in an expanded UN Security Council as a permanent member.”
Beyond UNSC: NSG and Bilateral Ties.
Slovakia also reaffirmed its “constructive approach” towards India’s membership of the *Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)*, the 48-member body that regulates global nuclear commerce.
The visit saw bilateral relations elevated to a “Comprehensive Partnership” the two sides signed MoUs on digital technologies, labour migration, higher education, and audio-visual cooperation, plus a Letter of Intent on defence cooperation. 35913be3. India’s UNSC Campaign.
India has long argued that the current 15-member UNSC structure with 5 permanent members holding veto power is “outdated and does not adequately reflect contemporary global realities”.
New Delhi’s candidature for a permanent seat is backed by all other G4 nations Brazil, Germany, and Japan — and a growing number of European countries. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini had extended full support in April 2025 during President Droupadi Murmu’s visit.
Other Areas of Cooperation.
The leaders condemned the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack and agreed to form a Joint Working Group on Terrorism*. They also backed adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the UN.
