Uniform Civil Code, UCC Bill, Asaduddin Owaisi, Gujarat Assembly, Muslim rights, Article 25, freedom of religion

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill passed by the Gujarat Assembly has been slammed by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who terms it "unconstitutional" and a violation of Muslim rights. Owaisi argues that the Bill infringes upon Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion .

Key Concerns with the UCC Bill.

Imposition of Hindu Succession Act: Owaisi claims the Bill imposes Hindu Succession Act on Muslims, undermining their personal laws.

Divorce and Adultery: The Bill requires proof of adultery for divorce, which Owaisi says is part of Hindu religion and not applicable to Muslims.

Live-in Relationships: Owaisi criticizes provisions on live-in relationships, saying they undermine marriage sanctity and are against Islam

Constitutional and Legal Implications.

Owaisi argues the UCC is a directive principle (Article 44) and not a fundamental right. He cites Babasaheb Ambedkar, stating the code should apply only to those who voluntarily agree .

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) also opposes the Bill, vowing to challenge it in the Gujarat High Court, citing concerns over religious freedom and equality .
