Trump Warns Iran of ‘Annihilation’ at UNGA; Bernie Sanders Calls Threat a ‘War Crime’
New York: US President Donald Trump said during his address to the United Nations General Assembly that he faced a choice between reaching a deal with Iran and “annihilating the Islamic Republic” and driving it “into hell.”
Trump said the United States could take military action against Iran if an agreement was not reached, while also indicating that he believed a deal could remain possible after the US midterm elections.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Senator Bernie Sanders said the United States should not “annihilate” the Iranian people. Sanders described such an action as a “war crime” and “barbarism.”
Sanders also accused Trump’s Iran war of being “illegal and unconstitutional” and called on Congress to take steps to end the conflict.
Trump’s comments came as the Iran conflict featured prominently in his UNGA address. The US president defended American military action while leaving open the possibility of further negotiations with Tehran.
