Shehbaz Sharif Claims ‘Victory’ Over India at UNGA; Indian Diplomat’s Reaction Goes Viral
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invoked the May 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), portraying Pakistan’s response to India’s Operation Sindoor as a success. The remarks came during the 81st session of the UNGA on September 25, 2026.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. The military confrontation continued for several days before hostilities ceased.
While Sharif was speaking about Pakistan’s account of the conflict, Indian diplomat R. Srinivas, who was present in the UN chamber, was captured on camera smiling, chuckling and shaking his head. The footage subsequently went viral on social media and drew widespread attention.
Sharif also credited US President Donald Trump with intervening during the 2025 confrontation and raised issues including Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty. India has maintained that the cessation of hostilities followed direct military-to-military communication between India and Pakistan, rejecting the characterization of a third-party role.
